QUICK EXIT
Wednesday was not a good day for Ohio Superintendent of Schools Susan Tave Zelman. Gov. Strickland said in his State of the State address that he wants the Legislature to create the position of director of the Department of Education and make it a cabinet position answerable to the governor. It is a key component of his plan to change education in Ohio.
The superintendent and the Ohio Board of Education would be demoted to advisory capacities.
Zelman's cold expression during the speech was in stark contrast to the smiles on the faces of Strickland's cabinet seated around her. Zelman — whose $217,838 salary supersedes the governor's $144,831 — bolted quickly from the House chambers after the speech, while others hung around to spin the speech to journalists.
