John Curry: A wake-up call to Active Teachers -- are you too busy to SEE what's happening to YOUR FUTURE?

Subject: Things haven't changed much, have they?

"We must first free ourselves of the illusion that we really have a health care system in America. What we have is a disorganized, disjointed, antiquated, obsolete non-system of health care. Consumers are being required to subsidize a non-system that fails to deal with their basic health care needs and the cost of that system is continuing to skyrocket."

Now for who said this and when was it said?

Well, these words were spoken in 1968. They ring even more true today.

Scroll down for the name of the speaker who issued these words in his address to the American Public Health Association. Did you find yourself agreeing with the quote?

These words were spoken by Walter Reuther, former President of the United Auto Workers. At that time, some viewed him as a communist - the same kind of views that led to the Joseph McCarthy witch hunts in the 1950's for an internal enemy that didn't exist. Some will blame the cost of a new U.S. made auto on the workers his organization represents- wonder if those same people are aware that the Japanese and German automakers don't have to add the price of worker health care on top of a new vehicle price- those countries have national health insurance.

As a boy (age 11 or 12), I had the opportunity to meet this person whom I believe had a vision into the future. Now my age nearly equals his age on that day in Washington D.C.-- I will never forget it. In regards to affordable health care for the citizens (both retired and not) of this country- well, we haven't progressed that much either-have we? Do OPERS retirees face the same kind of problems down the road that we are feeling now? Yes, they do, only not nearly with the same fierce effects as current STRS retirees and their spouses face. OPERS suffered the same devistating stock market losses in the same stock market that STRS suffered. OPERS planned ahead for "bumps in the road" - STRS didn't.

I close this commentary with another item of interest - OPERS hasn't and isn't being investigated by the Ohio Ethics Commission -- STRS's former Executive Director, Board members (on the "old Board"), and investments department have -- one has copped a plea and another has her trial scheduled for early December -- with more charges to come. This should tell active teachers that something seriously wrong has transpired within their retirement system -- will they realize this or will they be too busy and rely on what others tell them that did or didn't happen within an organization that they trust their futures to?
