Article from Franklin County RTA newsletter and comments from John Curry re: rehashing

Over 30% of those affected by the past and current problems at STRS seem to have been forgotten by the FCRTA newsletter- those being: the spouses and the dependents of the current and future retirees. It's more than just the "current and future retirees." This past problem needs to experience "rehashing" until it is corrected.

Maybe the Ohio Ethics Commission will decide that rehashing is not necessary for a former STRS board member who currently is charged with an ethics violation and those STRS Board members and associates who will be charged in the future (as David Freel of the Ohio Ethics Commission said will materialize)! I doubt it.

I agree that we do have to move on and concentrate on the current health care situation, but we should never forget history -- lest we repeat it.

STRS is now governed by an eleven-member board, eight of whom have served less than a year. A year of transition is inevitable. Hopefully, rehashing of past problems will dwindle and the board and the staff will concentrate on the most critical issue, affordable health care for current and future retirees.

To this end, the STRS staff held a series of meetings around the state to gauge support for an increase in active teacher and/or employer contributions that would provide a dedicated stream for health care. ORTA supports raising the current maximums, which are 10% for members and 14% for employers. The Ohio School Boards Association is vocally opposed.
