Sen. Marc Dann: 'Parents and Educators Should Serve on All University Boards'

From Sen. Marc Dann's blog (http://www.blogforohio.com)

"I think it's time that at every Trustee's Conference table there be at least one person who has been at their kitchen table at 2:00 a.m. trying to figure out how to afford college for their children."
Parents and Educators Should Serve on All University Boards
Last week I introduced SB 253 to change the way University Trustees in Ohio are selected. Under the current pay to play system trustees selected seem to need to meet only two criteria:

1. Be Breathing

2. Write a Check to Bob Taft

I think its time that at every Trustee's Conference table there be at least one person who has been at their kitchen table at 2:00 a.m. trying to figure out how to afford college for their children.

The bill also require University Boards of Trustees to include at least on educator. Right now the Boards are dominated by businesspeople and lawyers.

SB 253 would also require that there be both Democrats and Republicans on boards and that each and every board member have a specific connection to institution they are serving.

We need to create a constituancy for reducing tuitions at Ohio Universities. Tuition has increased more than 50 percent over the last 5 years and some of our young people and displaced workers are finding it less expensive to attend school out of state than in Ohio. This is an unacceptable scenario.

Please contact your Senator or Representative and ask them to support SB 253.
