Minutes of Oct. 16, 2008 CORE Meeting
The monthly meeting of Concerned Ohio Retired Educators was held at the STRS Building in Columbus on Oct. 16, 2008.
President Dave Parshall opened the meeting at noon after re-introducing the new executive director, Michael Nehf, to those in attendance. Mr. Nehf could only stay briefly due to an executive session of the STRS Board, which was being held simultaneously.
Following the departure of Nr. Nehf and Laura Ecklar, President Dave and the 24 other members welcomed new attendees: Charlotte Nagy; Marilyn La Schiaria; Alice Fargna; and Meg Dowdell. The minutes of the September meeting were then moved for acceptance by Mary Ellen Angeletti and seconded by Nancy Boomhower. The membership unanimously accepted the minutes.
Treasurer Herm Fisher gave the treasurer’s report, indicating we do have funds in our treasury at the present time.
New trustees, Mary Thomas, George Justice, and Jim Reed, were sworn in by President Dave.
Dave requested permission to update the CORE website. C.J. Myers made the motion; Marie Fetters seconded it; motion passed. Dave next reminded everyone of the 1:30 Nov. 13th meeting with Mr. Nehf.
Dave read a letter from immediate past secretary, Glenna Barr. She expressed disappointment about not being able to attend the meeting, but enclosed checks from the Highland County R.T.A. and herself.
Based on a letter from a concerned educator, CORE members engaged in an enthusiastic discussion about STRS wasting money on sending multiple people to conventions. It was decided that the letter should be shared with Dennis Leone first, and/or Mr. Nehf at a later date. The discussion also covered whether or not STRS has a contingency financial plan.
Members with questions or ideas for Mr. Nehf are encouraged to e-mail them to Dave Parshall in time for the Nov. 13 meeting.
The meeting was adjourned at 1 p.m., in time for members to attend the afternoon session of the board meeting.
The next regular CORE meeting will be held Thursday, November 20, 2008 at 11:45 a.m. on the second floor of the STRS building.
Respectfully submitted,
Marie M. Fetters
