Retiree group maintains influence
A group that has pushed from the outside for reforming the State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio will maintain its influence on the inside.
Two of the three candidates for the pension system's board who were endorsed by Concerned Ohio Retired Educators won seats in an election that concluded today, officials said.
Concerned Ohio Retired Educators has agitated for a number of changes in Ohio's second-largest pension system, most recently leading the quest to reduce or eliminate merit bonuses paid to investment officers.
The group has had a key ally on the board: Dennis Leone, a retired schools superintendent who frequently butted heads with other board members. Leone's term ends Aug. 31.
The recent election ensures that the activist retirees' group will maintain or expand its influence. Two of its endorsed candidates, Bob Stein and Jim McGreevy, were elected to seats reserved for retired educators. A third endorsed candidate, Jim Stoll, lost his bid for an active-teacher seat.
The Ohio Education Association, which sometimes clashes with the Concerned Ohio Retired Educators, also saw two of its three endorsed candidates win. The union's endorsed candidate for the active-teacher position, Carol Correthers, beat Stoll. McGreevy was endorsed by both the activist group and the teachers' union.
Perhaps not surprisingly, he was the top vote-getter among any of the candidates, with more than 25,000 votes, according to results released by the pension system today.
