Duke and Jane to STRS Board: Current retirees didn't create the problem

From Duke and Jane Snider, January 15, 2011
Subject: COLA
STRS Board Members,
We've read about Current Retirees' COLA could possibly be reduced. Is this really fair to current retirees? We have no way to off set the reduction. Current Retirees deserve to be Grandfathered and leave the COLA as is. Furthermore there have been information circulating that current retirees' COLA reduction could possibly take effect in one year or maybe less. Again is this fair?
In our opinion, we wonder if exposing what has happened in the past has an effect on future decisions? Elimination of the 13th check, eliminating spousal healthcare, and what's next? It's time to eliminate the 88%/35 yr, double dipping, overpaying of administrators, etc.
No where have we seen where STRS main headquarters have to make any adjustments to help offset expenses. We believe there have to be adjustments and changes, but they should not be with any type of reduction of current retirees' COLA. It would be fair to change how beginning teachers need to contribute more, and also boards of education need to increase their contributions, regardless whether some politicians want to do it or not. It's called running a business. Also STRS headquarters need to be held accountable and responsible for their decisions.
Some day many of you will understand when you retire that any type of reduction to your income will play a major part in your retirement days. Think about it and look at it realistically. Current retirees haven't caused the problem, but you know who have caused it, whether you want to admit it or not.
