State: Board member's work for charter school OK Says board wrong to demand Loretta Haugh's resignation Beacon Journal staff writers COLUMBUS - Akron school board member Loretta Haugh is not prohibited from having a job with a competing charter school company, the Ohio Ethics Commission said in an opinion released today. Haugh, however, may not participate in the school board's ``deliberations and decisions in matters that definitely and directly affect the financial or fiduciary interests'' of her or her employer, the opinion states. Haugh accepted a position in September as director of special projects for Summit Academy Management, a non-profit charter school company that competes with the Akron school district for students and funding. Haugh's new job created controversy, with her school board colleagues and others calling for her to resign. Tom McCarty, Haugh's attorney, requested an opinion from the ethics commission about whether her job and board duties conflict. The issue may be further discussed during a school board meeting at 5:30 p.m. tonight. For more information and reaction, see Tuesday's edition of the Akron Beacon Journal. |
