Antlanta Journal: Retired teachers must sign off on pay rules

Retired educators who come back to work in DeKalb County will have to sign an affidavit indicating they understand they are under pay restrictions, one of several changes announced by system officials at Monday's school board meeting.

The changes are being made in the wake of a more than $280,000 repayment the system must make to the state's teacher retirement system because six retired educators over the last two years worked more hours than legally allowed.

School systems commonly hire retirees to fill some positions, but state law, with some exceptions, generally restricts them to 19 hours a week if they are collecting their pensions.
