Subject: On Labor Day, The Health Care Fight Begins
Dear Thomas,
This Labor Day, the AFL-CIO is launching a nationwide drive to put the full force of its 10 million members and nearly 3 million union retirees behind winning secure, high-quality health care for all by 2009.
You can help. Over the holiday weekend, take a few minutes to talk to at least five friends or family members about the health care crisis. Or just forward this message to them.
The fact is, America isn’t working the way it should. Rising, irrational health costs are crippling families, companies and communities, while drug and insurance company CEOs are raking in money as never before.
Americans are ready for real change.
Our goal is to win secure, high-quality health care for all. We’ll do that by mobilizing and educating our members, building key alliances with businesses and progressive groups and making the 2008 elections a mandate on health care reform.
You can watch videos, get the latest health care news from the AFL-CIO Now blog and learn more about the key principles that will fix our health care system.
The fight for secure, high-quality health care continues when Congress returns to work after Labor Day. The House and Senate are working to expand the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) to cover millions of uninsured children.
Unfortunately, the latest U.S. Census figures show the number of Americans without health insurance increased by 2.2 million from 2005 to 2006. The number of uninsured now stands at 47 million, 22.3 percent more than in 2000.
And as the Bush administration fights the expansion of SCHIP, the number of uninsured children in this country increased by more than 600,000 from 2005 to 2006. (Test your knowledge of the health care crisis with our Labor Day Health Care Quiz.)
The movement for secure, high-quality health care begins now. We’ll be counting on your help in the coming months, just as we counted on you to help inoculate Bush’s threatened veto of children’s health care. Sincerely,
Working America, AFL-CIO
P.S. Remember to send the link to our health care website to your friends, family members and co-workers. We will need their help to build momentum for winning secure, high-quality health care for all by 2009. Here’s the link one more time: http://aflcio.org/issues/healthcare/ ---
Help Build a Movement for Secure, High-Quality Health Care for All
At an AFL-CIO press conference yesterday, Working America member Jean Tome spoke about how even though she works hard every day, she can't afford to go to the doctor. She said: “It’s hard to believe that a person gets to be my age in this country and is afraid to go to the doctor because they don't know how they're going to pay for it.” (Watch the video here.)
In America, no one should go without health care. And people like Jean Tome should have access to secure, high-quality coverage.
Join the fight for a better America at the AFL-CIO's new health care website.
