Jim Kimmel on the STRS marriage penalty

It is also important to note that even if a spouse HAS done some teaching in STRS system he/she may not get a spousal subsidy. My wife Judy taught a total of 12 years and STILL did not get a spousal subsidy. Her check is so small that they had to take the $501.00 (2006) out of my check. She also got ripped off because after that she tutored privately and dutifully reported it all on schedule C to the IRS. Then, when she turned 62 she applied for Social Security. She was supposed to get about $125 or so a month but due to the offset it was only $42. She had been paying into Social Security since about the middle 1950's including babysitting, work in shops, factories, etc in high school and college.

Like you say....there is a higher power.......and His Justice will prevail....sometime.
